Charles Casey
Born in Portsmouth in 1965, by the age of thirteen Charles
Casey had taught himself to play guitar and had plunged headlong
into the punk/new wave scene of the late 1970s. Following
an aborted biology degree at Central London Poly, he formed
the legendary underground funk/prog outfit Constant City (later
to become Kingdom of Mush), with ex-Squeeze member John Bentley.
An extended residency at South London bar Fungus Mungus, the
fuggy location of all manner of bohemian activity, started
him on a journey deep into improv and psychedelia. In 1994,
Charles met Damian Hand and formed Akasha, the original, tripped-out
purveyors of noirish jazzadelica. The pair have since released
three albums, and toured extensively, recently headlining
the big chill in 2007. An in-demand musician, Charles has
played and toured with Neneh Cherry, David Axelrod, the Divine
Comedy and Lemon Jelly. Into extreme cycling, Charles recently
took part in the 184km ‘Etape de Tour’, which
climbs 2,600 metres up into the Alps.
